Ray-Ban Background: Ray-Ban sunglasses were founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb. The first Ray-ban sunglasses were created for the United States Army Air Corps. They were specially designed to protect Army Air aviators from the glaring rays of the sun while still maintaining a stylish look. On May 7 1937 Bausch & Lomb took out the patent for their Anti-Glare aviator sunglasses. These famous Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses had and extremely light frame and were made of gold-plated metal with green lenses made of mineral glass to filter out infrared and ultraviolet rays. Pilots in the United States Army Air Corps immediately adopted the aviator sunglasses
Ray-Ban Wayfarer: The Ray-Ban Wayfarer is a design of sunglasses manufactured by Ray-Ban since 1952 when their design was a revolutionary break from the metal eyewear of the past. Ray-Ban Wayfarers enjoyed early popularity in the 1950s and 1960s. Though the sunglasses had faded from the limelight by the 1970s a lucrative 1982 product placement deal brought Ray-Ban Wayfarers to their height of popularity. Since the mid-2000s the sunglasses have been enjoying a revival.
Ray-Ban Wayfarers are sometimes cited as the best-selling design of sunglasses in history (although Ray-Ban Aviators have also been credited with this achievement) and have been called a classic of modern design and one of the most enduring fashion icons of the 20th century.
In 1999 Bausch & Lomb sold Ray-Ban sunglasses to the Italian Luxottica Group.
