Jodie Nelson did it! She is the first woman to paddle 40 miles! In an attempt to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness and Education, on Sunday, Nelson paddled nearly 40 miles from Catalina to Dana Point – a feat only three men have successfully completed. When she felt exhaustion she would look down on her board for inspiration. On her board she read the names of loved ones who have passed away or have battled breast cancer.

Jodie trained hard for this event. About two weeks ago Jodie’s trainer and a dear friend of many people at Tilly’s, Steve Adler, passed away at a young age of an aneurysm, making this heartfelt paddle was even more emotional.

She started at 6:15am and she was the only one out there. About 30 minutes into the paddle the most amazing thing happened – a 30-foot gray whale (who Nelson named Larry) came up beside her board. The whale stayed with her for nearly 2 hours. The whale was close enough she could pretty much pet it. Nelson stated in the Orange County Register, “It was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in my life.”

Tilly’s CONGRATULATES our dear friend, Jodie Nelson, for her hard work, courage, and dedication. Her goal is to raise $100,000 toward Keep a Breast Foundation and Boarding for Breast Cancer. With that said, there is still time to donate…go to www.paddlewithpurpose.com for more information and to make a donation.
